Recent research has revealed a significant shift in the barriers to electric vehicle (EV) adoption. Charge anxiety, or concerns about the adequacy of public charging infrastructure, has now overtaken range anxiety as the primary concern for potential EV buyers, according to This is Money. This change highlights the growing importance of reliable and accessible charging networks in encouraging the switch to electric vehicles.
A survey conducted by What Car? found that 37% of private car buyers cited worries about public charging infrastructure as the main reason they aren’t considering an EV. This concern surpasses worries about the range of EVs, which was the main issue for only 25% of respondents. The high cost of new EVs remains a significant barrier as well, with 34% of buyers citing it as their biggest hurdle, says What Car?.
The survey also revealed that 61% of people would consider an EV if the government implemented financial incentives, such as reducing VAT on public EV charging from 20% to 5%. This would bring costs in line with domestic electricity and help bridge the gap for those without home chargers.
Despite the challenges, there is optimism about the future of EV adoption. The public charging network has seen improvements, with three in five respondents noting better service over the past year. However, there is still a long way to go, as the average satisfaction rating for the UK’s public charging network is just 64 out of 100.
Claire Evans, consumer editor at What Car?, emphasized the need for government action to encourage EV adoption. She suggested measures such as speeding up the expansion of the public charging network, tightening legislation to ensure reliability, and introducing financial incentives for EV buyers.
As the EV market continues to evolve, addressing these concerns will be crucial in making electric vehicles a more attractive option for consumers. With the right support and infrastructure, the transition to electric mobility can become a reality for more people.
