Should you make any repairs before selling?

The condition of the van will undoubtedly affect the money you can expect to receive for it. While there’s nothing that you can do about the age or mileage of the van (other than making a good decision on the right time to sell), you might be considering fixing up some bumps and scrapes before trying to shift the vehicle.

Simple jobs that can make your vehicle more attractive to a buyer include fixing exterior damage and removing any logos or branding currently on the vehicle. These will make the van look more appealing and give you an easier time selling it.

Getting your documentation together

Probably one of the most time-consuming and confusing parts of any sale, there are a number of documents to get that’ll make your life easier when selling your van. Buyers will be wary of any van that isn’t properly documented, so it pays to get it sorted out before you advertise.

One of the most important documents to have to hand is your V5C, as this will prove your legal ownership of the vehicle at the time of sale. You’ll need to fill out section 6 of the form and send it off to the DVLA to confirm the change of ownership.

Other documents that might come in handy will be up to date MOT certificates and service history. While not every buyer will want to see these, they will help you to back up any claims you’ve made about the van’s maintenance.

Are there any legal issues to consider during the sale?

Depending on your situation there are different legal issues that could arise. If you’re prepared and have all the correct documentation in place, then there’s nothing more to consider than making sure that you send off the right section of the V5C.

Things can become a little trickier if the van is still on finance or has failed its MOTs. In these different scenarios, there are still ways to make a sale but it does become harder. Thankfully, we have the information you need to keep everything moving smoothly.
